My summer reading assignment for the novel Yellow Raft in Blue Water is "You must complete a reading response journal for Yellow Raft in Blue Water. You must write 5 entries of at least one page typed in Times New Roman 12 point. Respond to the characters, conflict, and themes in the novel. Look for interesting patterns and symbolism. Be specific and detailed. Quote the novel directly in your entries and cite page numbers. Your entries must reflect the entire novel with the last entry focusing on the book as a whole and your response to it. See the attached rubric for my expectations here." Can anyone give me any tips on how to organize this or a guide to writing a reading response journal because im not quite understanding the concept to this assignment. Thanks!
I would start by purchasing a cheap spiral bound notebook that you will use only for this assignment. This is not what will be handed in, but will be used for your notes.
In one section jot notes / summary from each chapter. Write page numbers of specific events. (Some people prefer to write in the book and use post-it notes instead of or in addition to doing this.)
Then have a page for characters, one for themes, and one for conflicts. As you read make notes on these pages. Most people prefer to make notes after they read each chapter.
On the notebook pages after that, you may wish to write or sketch out some paragraphs with your thoughts as you go through the book.
Essentially what you will write is five different essays on your reaction to the book and its contents and elements. Except, instead of the teacher giving you specific topics to write about, you have to come up with your own. Having the notes to look back at will help you.
It would also be good to discuss this with your teacher to make sure you are on the right track. Good luck!
